How to Clean Masks with Hollow-Frame Air Tubing

Why Hollow-Frame Masks Require Special Attention

Many modern CPAP masks use hollow-frame headgear, where air travels through flexible channels built directly into the mask frame.

This design can improve freedom of movement and reduce the amount of tubing positioned in front of the face, but the internal air pathways can be more difficult to wash and dry than conventional mask components.

Routine cleaning helps remove everyday oils, residue, and moisture that can accumulate during normal use.

Masks with Hollow-Frame Air Channels

Several popular mask designs use hollow silicone frames or similar internal air pathways.

These designs commonly include:

  • Nasal pillow masks

  • Nasal cradle masks

  • Full-face masks

  • Top-of-head hose connections

  • Hollow silicone frames

  • Flexible air tubing

Because air travels through the interior of the frame, both the external surfaces and internal pathways should be cleaned according to the manufacturer's care instructions.

How to Wash Hollow-Frame Masks

Always begin by reviewing the cleaning instructions provided by the mask manufacturer.

A typical manual cleaning routine may include:

  1. Disconnect the mask from the CPAP tubing.

  2. Separate washable components according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  3. Wash compatible components in warm water using an approved mild cleaning agent.

  4. Gently move the hollow frame through the water so the cleaning solution can enter the internal air pathways.

  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  6. Make sure water flows through the internal channels to remove any remaining cleaning solution.

  7. Shake out excess water.

  8. Allow all components to air dry completely before reassembly and use.

Do not use cleaning agents, temperatures, or cleaning methods that are prohibited by the accessory manufacturer.

Cleaning Hard-to-Reach Interior Areas

Hollow-frame masks contain internal surfaces that cannot easily be reached by hand.

During washing, it is important to allow water to travel through these passages rather than cleaning only the exterior of the frame.

After washing, rinse the internal pathways thoroughly to help remove remaining cleaning solution, oils, and loosened residue.

Long flexible hoses can present a similar challenge because the interior surface is difficult to reach manually. Water should be allowed to move through the full length of the hose during washing and rinsing.

Drying Hollow-Frame Components

Hollow frames and flexible hoses can retain water inside their internal passages after washing.

After rinsing:

  • Shake out excess water.

  • Position components so trapped water can drain.

  • Allow adequate airflow through internal channels.

  • Keep components away from direct sunlight or excessive heat unless permitted by the manufacturer.

  • Allow components to dry completely before reconnecting them to the CPAP system.

Drying may take longer for hollow-frame masks and long hoses because moisture can remain inside areas that are not exposed directly to room air.

Cleaning the Mask Cushion

Mask cushions come into direct contact with the skin and can accumulate facial oils and residue.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning frequency. Many manufacturers recommend regular washing of the cushion using warm water and a mild cleaning agent.

Avoid harsh soaps, alcohol, bleach, scented products, or other chemicals unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer, as these may damage mask materials.

Cleaning Flexible CPAP Tubing

Flexible tubing should be disconnected from the CPAP machine before washing.

For tubing approved for manual washing:

  1. Fill the tubing with warm water and an approved mild cleaning solution.

  2. Gently move the solution through the entire hose.

  3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  4. Shake out excess water.

  5. Hang or position the hose so water can drain and air can circulate through it.

  6. Allow the tubing to dry completely before use.

Heated tubing and specialty hoses may have different cleaning requirements, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific hose being used.

Tips for Maintaining Hollow-Frame Masks and Hoses

  • Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions for each component.

  • Thoroughly rinse internal air pathways.

  • Allow washable components to dry completely before use.

  • Inspect masks, cushions, frames, connectors, and hoses regularly.

  • Replace damaged or excessively worn components.

  • Do not expose components to excessive heat unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.

  • Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals unless approved for the particular accessory.

  • Check internal channels and hose connections for trapped moisture before reassembly.

Why Regular Cleaning Matters

Masks, hoses, and other reusable CPAP accessories are exposed to moisture, skin oils, dust, and everyday residue during normal use.

Regular cleaning helps maintain the condition of these components and can help prevent buildup that may cause odors, discoloration, or premature wear.

Hollow-frame masks deserve particular attention because their internal air channels can be more difficult to access during routine washing.

Keeping Complex CPAP Accessories Clean

Hollow-frame masks offer several comfort and mobility advantages, but their internal air passages can make routine cleaning more involved than cleaning conventional mask surfaces.

Paying particular attention to the inside of the frame during washing, rinsing thoroughly, and allowing sufficient drying time can help keep these components properly maintained.

Always follow the cleaning, care, and replacement instructions provided by the manufacturer of your CPAP equipment.

This thing is amazing.

I have a very high air-pressure setting, so a lot of air is moving through and when it's dry, the problem is pretty extreme. So the humidity has to be set on maximum, and that means the tank was running down very quickly and never making it through even a few hours. I don't think there is any other approach to the problem that can work like the C-Spring. I know there is at least one separate humidifier system but why? Why try to connect another tank that's not much larger? Or maybe run two at once struggling to calibrate the moisture, and then needing an additional powered heated tube because the humidifier I'm speaking of can't take a heated tube, which is needed to maintain a high enough dew point in the tube or the water will condense on the tube walls from being cooled by the air in the room? The C-Spring ends the problem at the source: you have your own tank in your device do what it normally does but now it never runs out of water during the night. And because it maintains the same half-full state of the CPAP/BiPAP tank it's always putting out the same level of humidity (when the tank is full it responds to the heat from the metal plate differently than when it's nearing empty). This is an upgrade that feels like it should be part of the system from the beginning.
The pump is surprising and wonderful - it does the fill in an instant and stops, like it's magic. The sensors are very clever - they measure the electrical capacitance of the water and the air so it knows perfectly what the water level is without having to get wet, right through the wall of the water reservoir. Kind of amazing that such sensors exist and very nice that they're part of this system. When I tilt the tank to check that everything is working (the recommended method) the fill is silent and immediate, not in spurts, no sense of something struggling, no whine or chunk-chunk of a pump. Just instantly up to the proper level. So far, I would describe this as perfect.
And the customer service in terms of help has been excellent.

This is my second C-Spring. To be clear I broke the first, not a quality problem. These little machines are just so convenient. Makes cpap compliance much easier. If you’re considering your first here are my two pieces of advice: 1. If you like sleeping in the dark, Get the blackout cover, full stop. 2. It’s ok to cut the hose to a good length if there is far more than you need between the c-spring and your cpap. Having a ton of line coiled up is a bit of a pain. If you make a mistake repayment is cheap.

I have bad allergies. For many years I have depended on a hypoallergenic filter in the CPAP and an inline bacterial filter. This kind of helped. But with the recent wildfires and their smoke, I was coughing all night and needed to try something else. I bought a Cspring CPAP HEPA filter. Installation was easy, and I experience far less respiratory distress. This is such an obvious issue that I am surprised that no one came up with a product like this before. Highly recommended.

It is good

It is good . They send me adapter for AS10 Hose and now I can attach it to the nozzle inside. Will not dy the hose. Have to use the hurricane dryer. Heve to unplug other wise keeps running hot air. Citric acid leaves residue in humidifier chamber. Dawn works better.
